Pair of “Jeans Rondo” Easy Chairs by Erik Deforce (Ric Def) for Hi-Plan, Belgium, 1972
Rare set of lounge chairs from the Jeans Rondo collection, designed by Belgian designer Erik Deforce (Ric Def) and produced by Hi-Plan in Ingelmunster in 1972. The collection was awarded a Design Centre Brussels selection that same year, as confirmed by the original sticker still present on the frame.
The chairs feature a sculptural frame in black lacquered oak plywood with rounded edges, combined with generous cushions in dark blue leather. Conceived as a Pop-Art influenced total interior concept for the modern home of the 1970s, the Jeans Rondo line was produced in versions with denim and lacquer as well as leather. This pair represents a documented example of Belgian seventies design, combining playful geometry with craftsmanship, and remains highly collectible today.
Erik Deforce, who also presented his work under the name Ric Def, gained international attention with his “Lord” chair for Gervan, shown at the Interieur ’70 fair in Kortrijk and now considered an icon of Belgian modern design. Alongside the Lord chair, the Jeans Rondo collection illustrates his innovative approach, blending affordability, Pop-Art influences and sculptural form.
Documented examples like this pair, still bearing the original Design Centre Brussels sticker, rarely surface on the market and are sought after by collectors of twentieth-century Belgian design.
One chair had previously been subject to an unsympathetic restoration. This has since been carefully corrected, with attention to both structural integrity and visual coherence, ensuring the pair presents beautifully while retaining authenticity.
